Midland Center for the Arts Announces Auditions for The SpongeBob Musical

Midland Center for the Arts is bringing the magic and fantasy of Bikini Bottom to the stage this spring with The SpongeBob Musical and is seeking members of the community to audition for this spring production with Center Stage Theatre, the national award-winning community theatre company based in Midland. The SpongeBob Musical is based on the iconic Nickelodeon series written by Stephen Hillenburg and with a book by Kyle Jarrow, and will be directed locally by Travis Kendrick, Manager of Produced Theatre and Theatre Education at the Center.

The Center is seeking performers in high school and older to fill all of the roles in this dynamic stage musical with some of the most well-known characters on television. Auditions will take place February 26 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for individual singing and acting appointments, followed by a dance call for all auditionees from 12 – 1:30 p.m. “It is so exciting to bring this incredibly popular television series to the stage,” mentioned Travis Kendrick, Manager of Produced Theatre and Theatre Education at Midland Center for the Arts. “This production features original music by some of the greatest music legends in the world that will send audiences home with a pep in their step.”

The musical features many of the iconic characters in the hit series including SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward and all of Bikini Bottom as they face total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage. The original songs are written by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley.

The production will run for seven performances on the Little Theater Stage at the Center for the Arts, May 5 – 7 and 12 – 13 at 7:30 p.m. and May 7 - 8 at 2 p.m. The production team features Travis Kendrick as Director and Co-Choreographer, Gina Kearly as Co-Choreographer and Brandon Waddles as Music Director. Individuals looking to audition should email rudnitsky@midlandcenter.org to setup an appointment.

All participants in the production will be required to be fully vaccinated. Rehearsals begin in February, and will take place four times per week leading up to the performance. For more information on auditions, please visit midlandcenter.org/perform.
